Since appearing in The Art of Faery book two years ago Jessica’s
creative faery images have touched the hearts of many, appearing
on gift cards and being merchandised world wide. I asked her how
she now felt about her artistic progress and her plans for the future
“I have always felt that we, as individuals, see the world
of faery according to our own state of mind. Because our current
situations are ever changing, and our emotions evolve depending upon
our circumstances, it is only natural that our visions of faeries
can also change and evolve. I experienced this myself in fact, and
it translated directly into my faery art.
My own style of painting faeries emerged as bold, colorful and hard-lined
watercolors. I became known for this style, especially for my darker
faeries. However, due to a change in my life, I was taken on a journey
to see the world of the fae in a different fashion."
After much experimenting, Jessica came up with a new painting process
using a strange combination of airbrushing, pencil and acrylic. This
method of painting involves airbrushing the background in various
tones of the same hue. After that, the fairy is sketched onto the
background using both black and white charcoal pencils. Then, colored
pencils are used to add a few touches of color.
Finally, a fine tipped
brush and white acrylic paint are used for all the bright highlights.
