THE FAIRY FAITHFUL

“We need those challenges and visions as much now as we ever have, and we need to be tricked and beguiled as well. It is good to see that Puck and the Will o’the Wisp, as well as the regal allure of the high elves, are leading still more of us down the winding road to fair elfland, and to its hollow hills, enchanted woods and sublime dreams.”
Alan Lee

This September 2005 sees the publication of an unique pair of books perpetuating the legacy of Alan Lee and Brian Froud with their first book ‘Faeries’ first published over twenty six years ago and still a best seller. Both illustrators continue to have illustrious careers in the Faery and Fantasy genre but not before illuminating a magic in a new generation of young people who have since become artists and illustrators influenced by the legacy of Froud and Lee and others.

It is a credit to the artists and their beautiful illustrations presented by David Riché in these companion books that their mentors have recognised their achievements and the strength of the visionary art of the 21st century with resounding forewords of encouragement and support as they themselves continue to amaze readers with new ‘Lady Cottington’ discoveries and revelations, and a Lord of the Rings Sketchbook both to be published October 2005.

This is indeed a Fairies World, it is our own individual connection to nature, to the world about us and the world within us, which is a very personal individual journey. Whichever artist's name happens to be on the work, it is almost like we have to maintain the reverence and sacredness of the whole concept, which is something bigger than all of us. It is something that we as individuals can access and need to access at this time in the world. When you start to paint faeries you set off on the beginning of a spiritual journey. These two companion books are a worthy testament that the legacy of Brian Froud and Alan Lee and the messages of Faery should reach every household and awaken the innocence of childhood and the beauty of this Earth in which we should coexist with humor and more care and consideration.
