William Morris, an English designer, author and
socialist, his work formed the centerpiece of the founding of
the Arts & Crafts Movement, encompassing designs for stained
glass, wallpaper, carpets, fabric, tapestries, furniture, carving,
book binding and printing. He encouraged methods of hand production
over machine production.
William Morris is remembered for his designs which created a complete
revolution in public taste. Morris & Company was formed in 1875.
Today he is especially celebrated for his pattern designs for carpets
and wallpaper. He believed that the forms in patterns should be drawn
from nature, and selected to be particularly suited for the surfaces
they will be used on as well as for the manufacturing medium. Morris
founded a decorating firm which became known throughout the world for
supplying wallpaper, fabric and carpet.
This represented an ultimate challenge for Myrea. The studying in depth
of William Morris patterns and designs. Following a visit
to Ecuador she had taken a photograph of a plant on one of the islands
in the Galapagos, this image she felt had to be the centrepiece of her
design. You can see her process from the beginning to her completed design.
