Where the Grapes are Grown - Dorothea Barth 2012© Fallbrook CA USA

Go ye where the grapes are grown
Above the valley’s mist
Where on a hill a castle stands
By dreams and sunshine kissed

Past the inns and past the wares
Past culinary glee
Winds the road where on the left
Transforms the century

For all ye that may lack belief
The castle that you see
Is no mirage, is no façade
Time travelers all are we

Its bricks were shaped, its iron wrought
By many knowing hands
The master craft of years long past
The wealth of many lands

Lost riches resurrected
In  tower, church and cellar
In Great Hall from whose frescoed walls
Whispers the story teller

And were you to meander
The paths beneath the ground
You might just find the key to where
The vineyard’s fruits abound

Another great endeavor
Fine wines, Italian style
The summer’s harvest here transformed
Makes Dionysus smile

Time travelers who may soon desire
A Friend to Baron be
May well partake of banquets rare
And castle revelry

This castle and its mystery
A dream of decades three
Stands proud amidst the Napa vines
Not distant Tuscany

Go ye where the grapes are grown
In awe of what you see
A visionary castle
That welcomes you and me

A personal note from the author
I wrote Where the Grapes are Grown on New Year’s day 2012. It was inspired by a visit to Castello di Amorosa, an authentic replica of an Italian medieval castle that took 30 years to complete. It stands in Calistoga in the Napa Valley and is the vision of Dario Sattui. The castle is quite amazing to behold, especially here in the U.S!
