The Gathering

Who gathers beneath yonder oak
With bags and baskets too
I dare not ask the what or why
But gathering they do

Is it the acorn that they seek
That’s lately scattered here
And nestled in the rusty leaves
Is winter very near?

If gathering nuts they must and do
To store or grind themselves
Prithee, leave behind a few
For squirrels and for elves!
